Changing Spark Plugs in Your New BMW

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 16:44

It is quite easy to locate and purchase a set of spark plug wires for your vehicle at the local automotive supply shop, or by visiting the parts department at a nearby BMW dealer. Here is how to remove the old ones and replace them with the new wires.

Step 1: Pull out each spark-plug wire one at a time. Grasp them at the base and remove. You can use a wire puller tool or just use your hands.

Step 2: Consider the length of each plug wire, they are all different. When you are putting the new wires on, you have to make sure that each corresponding plug wire goes into the same position as it did on the old wire system. Removing and replacing each wire one at a time will help make sure that the correct wire goes to the right plug position and to the proper position on the distributor cap. All you have to do is remove and match up the sizes to know which new wire to work with.

Step 3: Put the new wires on to the spark plugs on one end and to the distributor cap on the other. Listen for the faint clicking sound when connecting the wire. This noise will indicate that it has been properly attached.

Step 4: You can simply repeat steps 1 through 3 for each of the remaining plug wires.

Step 5: You’ll want to replace the vehicles coil wire, if your vehicle has one. The coil wire is the wire that goes from the center of the distributor cap to the coil itself.

Go ahead and spend a little extra money for a good quality set of spark plug wires. If you decide to go cheap, chances are good that they will fail early. Also, you may see performance issues resulting from the installation of low-grade plug wires.
